THE green light was finally signalled this week to redevelop Rawtenstall’s dilapidated Valley Centre. After a lengthy debate, councillors voted in favour of plans to knock down the old building and create a new retail and residential complex. Millions of pounds will now be pumped into transforming the site, off Bank Street, into 116 apartments, shops, a cafe quarter, restaurants and a 369-space car park, creating around 300 new jobs. A condition was also made which also set aside £75,000 for a CCTV scheme in the town. www.rossendalefreepress.co.uk/news/s/1035737_valley_centre_plans_passed
I'm not convinced that this is going to be beneficial for Rossendale, I'd have expected a lot better for Rawtenstall to be honest. I've seen the plans and this is a developers project not a shoppers project. It has very few shops, a ludicrous amount of parking which will no doubt all be taken up by the ridiculous amount of flats that are being crammed in. This is a disaster from beginning and will end up one too. In 20 yrs time Rawtenstall will end up with yet another semi derelict concrete and broken glass jungle. Recent development in Rawtenstall makes me very worried for it's future, lack of forsight, lack of design, lack of good architecture, and a supermarket battle that is killing the whole area. The new hall hey development is yet another example, out of town, no access to the town for pedestrians and poor , in fact dangerous access from the road. I know I'm not alone in thinking that roundabout is dangerous.
